Semester-2

UNIT-1

Fundamentals, history and evolution of microbiology.
Classification of microorganisms: Microbial taxonomy, criteria used including molecular approaches, Microbial phylogeny and classification of bacteria.

Microbial diversity: Distribution and characterization prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells, morphology and cell structure of major groups of microbiology e,g bacteria, algae, fungae, and protozoa.

General account of viruses : structure, reproduction and life cycle , lambda, M13 and TMV.

UNIT-2

Cultivation and maintenance of microorganisms: Nutritional categories of microorganisms, methods of isolation, purification and preservation.

UNIT-3

Microbial growth: Growth curve, generation time, synochrous growth batch and continuous culture , measurements of growth and factors affecting growth of bacteria.

Microbial metabolism: metabolic pathways, amphi- catabolic and biosynthetic pathways.

Bacterial reproduction: transduction, transformation and conjugation: endospores and sporulation in bacteria.

UNIT-4

Control of microorganisms: by physical, chemical and chemotherapeutic agent's.
Water microbiology: Bacterial pollutants of water, coliforms and non- coliforms, sewage composition and it's disposal.
